The 2009 finalists for the “Australian Design Awards - James Dyson Award” have been announced. While the winner will be announced at the Australian International Design Awards Presentation Night on Friday 29 May 2009, all the entries in the list are unique in a way or the other. Among the entries is the Solaqua, a water disinfection unit intended to be used in rural sub-Saharan Africa. The device makes use of ultra-violet and infrared rays from the sun to get rid of the pathogens within contaminated water. Raw water is first passed through a sari cloth filter, so that the efficiency of solar water disinfection can be enhanced. A five tap funnel fills five specially designed bottles to get ten liters of water. The transparent bottle surface allows maximum exposure to UV rays when laid down on the ground. The black, back surface of the bottle absorbs heat and the reflective inner surface reflects UV rays inside the water.

Solaqua tries to emphasize on the importance of water with its vibrant colors. It comes with a double sided handle for easy transportation. Solaqua aims to promote a sustainable technique of getting clean water.

As populations in developing nations increase alongside global pollution and the spread of water-borne illnesses, the need for clean and efficient water filtration has never been more urgent. Recently, the International Water Association (IWA) awarded UNICEF and the Water and Sanitation Program with the 2008 Project Innovation Award Grand Prize for providing Cambodia with ceramic water filters. These water purification devices are made and distributed by Cambodian nationals, and have resulted in a 50 percent drop in diarrheal illnesses in the region since their implementation in 2002. read more >

In Surface Values, Finnish artist Eemil Karila reframes the perpetual question of what lends the institutional receptacle its pristine, unquestionable authority. Dispensing with the cold narrative's all too typical materials: four white walls, stark fluorescent overhead lights – Karila explores the endless recalibration of the exhibition space and the oft-unacknowledged sociopolitical implications in each reapplication of matte white paint. Previously exhibited at Rovaniemi Art Museum, Finland and Galerija Vartai (Vilnius), Lithuania, Surface Values marks Eemil Karila’s first solo exhibition in Berlin.

Alternating black light brings the performance of a marginalized actor into focus; the UV inks mixed into a solution of cleaning chemicals trace the motions of the part-time cleaner, a former nurse from the Ukraine with quiet poise. Herself a supportive figure in the ephemeral architecture of PROGRAM's network of collaborators, Ludmila agreed to take part in Surface Values on the conditions that her portrait not be permanently archived on our website, and that her last name not be used.

The largest and most famous construction project currently taking place in Dubai is of course the Burj Dubai. Opening in 2009, the Burj Dubai is a super duper tall skyscraper set to be the tallest in the world (818 meters or 2,684 ft). Currently it is the tallest man-made structure on Earth but Burj Dubai will not officially gain the title of tallest building in the world until its completion in 2009.

The total budget for the Burj Dubai project is about US$4.1 billion and the price of office space had reached $4,000 per sq ft.
